Artist Statement
The series is part of ongoing research on the subject of the Anthropocene, with its by-products and materiality presented through junk, “abjected” matter, abandoned pieces, and found objects. These elements become descriptive of the new paradigm on micro- and macro-levels. By addressing the objects of man-made production in combination with the modes by which these objects are produced, inhabited, and used, we are working towards re-interpreting the relationship between humans and the surrounding natural and cultural environments. In this sense, each project becomes a micro-model of the anthropocentric world in its formation. Sculptures featured in the series address the tension between the notion of artificial and natural. They challenge the existing juxtaposition between the human body and the earth (with its various formations). The collection of objects and hybrids presents a series of explorations that range in scale and that play with the notion of form and formless, fluid and stagnant, “abjected” and “seductive.”
The2vvo (thezwo) is an artist duo from Kazakhstan currently living between Berlin and Los Angeles, made up of Eldar Tagi (sound art) and Lena Pozdnyakova (sculpture, visual arts). The duo explores the complicated dynamics between cultures and spaces, objects and processes through sound, sculpting, and performance. Noise, chaos, and feedback are prominent elements in the artists’ sound art and installation works. Their research often takes the form of sound sculptures, recordings, and live audio-visual performances. Nomadic in nature, the duo traveled extensively, participating in festivals such as Ars Electronica, Unsound, CTM, Bauhausfest, Soundpedro, and taking part in residences: Kuona Trust, Nairobi, Kenya, CEC Artslink, among others. Recently, the artists have shown their sculptures at Los Angeles Municipal Gallery and CICA Czong Institute for Contemporary Art. Lena is an alumna of the Design Theory and Pedagogy program at the SCI-Arc in Los Angeles, of Sheffield University in the UK, and of DIA Hochschule Anhalt in Germany. She is currently writing her Ph.D. dissertation in Art History at Freie University in Berlin. Eldar is a sound artist and improviser currently doing his Master’s in Sound Art and Sonic Studies at UDK Berlin.
