Community
Belonging, safety, reciprocity—these are words we think define community. Or maybe you have other thoughts. Does reciprocity come with conditions? What happens when we question our communities? What strains these relationships? Can community sustain critique? For this issue, send us your best work focusing on community, and show us what community means to you.
Barzakh magazine
will be accepting submissions for our Spring 2027 issue from September 15 to November 15, 2026. We are looking for original works of art—fiction, nonfiction, poetry, visual art, hybrid pieces, & creative works in translation—that explore the theme of community and its many facets. Send us your best work that productively speaks about the nature of belonging, how communities form or sustain themselves, the issues that threaten community, or any other appropriate interpretation of the theme.
Genre-specific Guidelines:
Prose (fiction/creative nonfiction) – Please upload one text file (DOCX, PDF, RTF, etc.) including up to 6000 words total (one long piece or multiple shorter pieces up to 3000 words). Use a standard 12 point font and double-spaced lines.
Poetry – Please upload one text file (DOCX, PDF, RTF, etc.) including up to 3 poems.
Visual Art – Please upload up to 6 image files (IMG, PNG, TIF, etc.). Please include an image list that includes the title, date, size, medium, and year of each piece you submit.
Multi-genre/ Hybrid Work – If the submission is text-based, please upload one text file (DOCX, PDF, RTF, etc.) including up to 3 hybrid works (no more than 3000 words). If the submission is image-based, please upload up to 6 image files (IMG, PNG, TIF, etc.). If you'd like these pieces to be considered for our visual-art section, please include an image list that includes the title, size, medium, and year of each piece you submit.
We also welcome creative works in translation, which should adhere to the above guidelines for their genre. Full citation information about the work should be included in your cover letter with submission.
Other Guidelines:
Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please let us know immediately if your piece is accepted elsewhere.
Be sure to include a brief third-person biography as your cover letter so that we may properly credit your work, should it be accepted.
Barzakh is currently a non-paying market.
